Bewitching Broadway Comedy
The play opens in Gillian Holroyd’s converted New York brownstone
on Christmas Eve and the action continues over the next few months.
Gillian, a beautiful woman in her late twenties, possesses special
magical powers and is, in fact, a modern day witch. She casts
a spell over an unattached publisher, partly to keep him away
from a rival and partly because she is attracted to him. He falls
head over heels in love with her at once and wants to marry her
but witches, unfortunately, cannot fall in love and this minute
imperfection leads to a number of difficulties. The sweet comic
mayhem is enhanced by Gillian’s playful brother, her slightly
mad aunt, a famous author who just happens to stop by for a cocktail
and Pywacket—an alluring feline devoted to Gillian. Will
romance triumph in the end? We don’t really know until the
final curtain.
